A few days ago, relevant media reported that the General Administration of Customs had investigated and dealt with smuggling of more than 100,000 tons of frozen chicken wings, frozen beef and other by-products. Some of the meat came from epidemic areas and some were seriously out of date, but after being processed and seasoned with chemicals, it turned out to be a delicious dish with excellent taste. These "smuggled meat" were imported into Hong Kong and sold to restaurants in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other provinces and cities in the second and third tiers. The chemicals-rich and inferior meat swung onto our dining table, making people defensible.

Industry analysts say that the reason why smuggling of frozen meat is so open and rampant is that there is a big gap between domestic and foreign meat prices. Take beef for example. We sell beef for 50 yuan or more per kilogram, while Brazilian smuggled beef sells for about 25 yuan per kilogram. People only know how to buy cheaply, there is a market when there is demand. Businessmen chase profits when they see profits. Smuggling a ton can make profits of 20,000 to 30,000 yuan. Driven by such interests, some undesirable businessmen ignored the law and morality and dried up the sale of frozen meat smuggling.

However, the rampant smuggling has been prohibited repeatedly. In addition to the illegal elements who choose to take risks in order to obtain rich profits, whether the regulatory authorities are effective or not remains to be considered. Imports of frozen goods must be submitted with relevant customs certificates, and sales are not permitted without Customs certificates. Why can these smuggled frozen meat escape such strict customs procedures? It is believed that the relevant departments are to blame.

"Food is the most important thing for the people, food is the first thing." Foreign smuggled frozen products continue to flow into the domestic market, which has been prohibited repeatedly. In addition to eliminating smuggling criminal gangs, the more important thing is that the regulatory authorities should really perform their duties and do a good job in food safety supervision. Food safety as a basis for the stable development of a country, we still have a long way to go.
